The Internal Operations of Businesses – the purpose of this series of posts is to address oppression in business organisations. Oppression is the unjust use of power and authority by a group, which results in the control, exploitation, or mistreatment of another group. You will agree that business organisations with their various hierarchies and organizational layers are prime candidates for oppressive tendencies to thrive. Ecclesiastes 5:8-9 confirms this. It says: “If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them. Moreover the profit of the land is for all; even the king is served from the field”.
Oppression in the workplace is indeed rampant, being introduced and maintained by clever business philosophies and management practices. Those who are oppressed bear the brunt but are often powerless to demand or achieve any changes. They will be told it is not personal, it is just business.
Well, God does not condone oppression under any guise or excuse. He sees what is going on in business organisations and is set to fully address it.
